***** Mercy goes to his new home! *****
May 2008

Mercy has completed all of his treatment for heartworms and all of the other medical issues that he had due to his abuse and neglect and has now gone to his new home.

Mercy is alive today ONLY because of caring friends like YOU who partnered with us during his courageous journey back to health. Please remember that he is only one of hundreds that we help save each year and they all still need your help and support. Mercy was a blessing to care for, he truly inspired us. Mercy taught us that despite being abused and neglected, we are never to give up on life or people. Even though Mercy suffered at the hands of humans, his forgiving spirit has shown through. He is now an indoor dog and is loving life with his new human family and two other canine companions. His personality develops more each day and he is bringing such joy to the lives of his new owners. He wakes his new owners every morning with a big kiss and tail wag and greets them when they walk in the door from a long day with unbelievable happiness and excitement.

To all of you wonderful staff at Fuzzy Friends Rescue,
Thank you for saving Mercy's life!  Mercy is so precious around this house. I can hardly wait to be greeted by him in the morning, and can hardly wait to have him jump in my arms when I get home from work.  He is so gentle and well mannered and funny, but very affectionate to his Mama, and particularly to me.  I love being awakened in the morning with his jingling tags coming down the hallway and into our bedroom and then his nose into my arms. He prefers to sleep out in the den with the other dogs, but he knows where I am when he is ready for love and breakfast. Mercy is so well adjusted to his doggie door. At first he only used it when the other dogs would go outside, or when I would go with him.  But he now comes and goes as he pleases, with or without the rest of us.    This weekend he would go outside and lie down in the shade and sleep and when he got hot, he would be back in the house 30 minutes later to get air conditioning. He loves his freedom to come and go as he wishes.  My shepherd mix absolutely loves Mercy and plays rough with him just like they have been friends all along. My shepherd mix will lie down beside Mercy in the back yard. It is so sweet!   He has a sleeping bag that he lies on right beside my recliner in the evening, and he snuggles in real close to me when he smells pop corn!   Mercy has completely cured our habit of leaving wash cloths and things lying around in the bathroom. It seems that Mercy loves picking them up and taking them out into the yard.
Warm Regards,
Mercy's Papa

Mercy's miracle walk after his operation!

It is December 12th and while most of you are shopping for presents, planning your Christmas dinner and curling up by a warm fire, we at Fuzzy Friends are seeing the harsh reality of animal neglect and abuse. Just when we think we have seen it all, another animal comes to us in deplorable condition. This morning at 11 a.m. a woman came through our doors so distraught she could barely speak. As she drove into Waco, she spotted a dog in the bar ditch along the highway. When she got out of the car she could not believe her eyes! She grabbed the only food in her car which were rice krispy treats. She thought she could entice him into the car with a few bites. She then realized that he could not stand or walk. She called her husband and he was on the scene within minutes. He loaded the dogs emaciated body into the front seat of her car. She drove straight to Fuzzy Friends and waited in her warm car an hour and a half until we opened. As she sat there in disbelief at his emaciated body, she decided to name him Mercy.

This woman could not keep driving-casting an indifferent look. She stopped to help, not realizing at the time that Mercy would not have survived the night in the drizzling cold weather. After a visit to the veterinarian earlier today, Mercy is resting comfortably on a over-sized comforter. We are monitoring his food and water intake every two hours and he has also been started on antibiotic therapy. The vet informed us that Mercy has several issues that could prove life threatening, only time will tell.

We at Fuzzy Friends are doing our part to help Mercy. Now we need your help. Come and join us in the fight to end animal cruelty and neglect—we need you on our side. Please make a donation today for Mercy. We will keep you updated. In advance, thanks for your support.

** An Update on Mercy **

Friday started out great for Mercy, and we here at Fuzzy Friends were all so encouraged.  After eating his breakfast and taking his morning medications and a short walk outside, Mercy stood at the window, watching other dogs being walked.  He wagged his tail and was extremely alert. Early afternoon, he took a turn for the worse.  The veterinarian had warned us that the first 48 hours would be the critical hours and it was true.

Around 1:30 pm, we went to check on Mercy, only to find that he had crashed.  He refused food and was barely responding.  After a physical exam and x-rays, it was determined that Mercy's only chance of survival was surgery.  The x-rays revealed debris of some kind in his stomach, and without surgery he would die within hours.   Once the stomach was opened, a gallon trash bag with numerous pieces of a hard plastic material was removed.  Mercy would have never passed this.

Mercy is a fighter...he wants to live.  Although Mercy survived his surgery, he is not "out-of-the-woods."  He will be on the critical list for the next couple of weeks.  With abdominal surgery, infection is always a consideration.  Mercy is now on two different antibiotics. We here at Fuzzy Friends believe that Mercy deserves a second chance, and we are giving him the best of care.  We are helping Mercy in his fight for his life, but he needs you too.  Right now, today, is your chance to help him get the medical care that will not only save his life, but will change his life forever.  We are on Mercy's side, but he needs you.  Every gift will help.   If you believe in our life-saving mission and want to be a part of Mercy's recovery, please donate in honor of Mercy.

In advance, thank you for supporting an effort we take very seriously.  Let's make this the best Christmas Mercy has ever had!!

This is a picture of what the veterinarian removed from Mercy’s stomach. It looks to be a children’s plastic ball and a portion of a baseball cap. This was all contained within a trash bag that he swallowed.

** An Update on Mercy **
December 19, 2007

Mercy is doing very well since his surgery. He is still a very sick guy and is going to need YOUR help to continue his medical treatment. He is on a prescription food, two different antibiotics, medication for his anemia, de-wormer for his hookworm infestation, topical medication for his ulcers on his legs and after months of recuperation, he will need to be treated for heartworms. Hopefully he will be our Christmas miracle.

** Update on Mercy **
December 28, 2007

Mercy is healing well from his surgery and getting stronger each day. He has gained 13.5 lbs. In two weeks and now weighs. 92.9. He still has a long recovery, and he we continue to monitor his medical condition very closely. He is still anemic and will remain on iron and other medications for several more months. He is eating a prescription diet that is easy for him to digest to allow him to heal and he will also be having routine bloodwork and other lab tests to make sure that no other health problems are starting due to his several malnutrition.
Thank you for helping up care for Mercy's medical needs. Please continue to help us provide the best medical care for him by donating in honor of this amazing animal.

** Mercy breaks 100!! **
January 30, 2008

Mercy has gained 23.7 lbs. and now weighs in at 103lb.!! His goal weight will be somewhere around 160 lbs. or more. He is starting to digest his food better and is having less digestion issues each day. He is monitored very closely each day and is still being fed a special diet to help his system continue to heal from the major surgery he had in December. He continues to be on daily medication to help his severe anemia. Once he has gained more weight and has recovered more, he will have to be treated for heartworms. He will have more routine lab work in the near future as well as medication when needed for an old ACL injury to his back right leg. He still needs YOUR HELP to continue to recover from his extreme malnutrition. Thank you for helping up care for Mercy's medical needs. Please continue to help us provide the best medical care for him by donating in honor of this amazing animal.

Mercy Prepares for Heartworm Treatment
March 2008

Mercy’s in the home stretch, but he still needs your help. The difference that YOU make today can make ALL the difference for Mercy.

Today is February 28th and we at Fuzzy Friends are so excited. Mercy officially weighs 111.7 lbs. The vets have given him the “green light” for the last treatment that will restore him back to health – his HEARTWORM TREATMENT. Even with our discount, Mercy’s heartworm treatment is going to be very costly. Mercy is alive today ONLY because of caring friends like YOU who have partnered with us on his courageous journey back to health.

Like many dogs that come through our doors, Mercy has inspired us. Mercy has taught us that despite being abused and neglected, we are never to give up on life or people. Even though Mercy suffered at the hands of humans, his forgiving spirit has shown through.

By partnering with us today, you will have the opportunity to change Mercy’s life forever. Please don’t leave this to someone else. In advance, thank you for your kindness and support.

Animal abuse and neglect never take a day off

Last Thursday, February 28th started out as a routine day of caring for 150 of our community’s homeless animals and working to find them awesome, loving homes. Right after lunch, one our board members and his wife walked through the front door and our routine day turned to anything but routine.

They had stopped at a drive-through restaurant, when they spotted a dog in need. The dog was huddled under a school bus, shaking. Dragging a chain behind him, it was apparent he had been “just existing” on a chain for quite some time. Fortunately for this sad, little dog, he finally broke free from his cruel captors, was spotted by compassionate people and brought him to Fuzzy Friends. We have named him Bogart.

Encased in a solid cocoon of matted hair laden with urine, feces and filth, his condition proved this dog had been severely neglected. Long-term lack of grooming had created severe matting under his hind legs. Being unable to walk normally, he was hopping around like a rabbit. It was pitiful. It looked as if every flea in town had descended on his little emaciated body. We removed close to three pounds of knotted hair – over one-third of the dog’s total body weight -revealing a frail, white poodle. He is just skin and bones! It will be several weeks before he is strong to endure a complete grooming.

He is so thin and weak, but he is eating. He wants to live. The vet examined Bogart this morning and has told us that he is severely anemic and malnourished. He has been given de-wormer for the hookworms and whipworms he has.

He has received a rabies shot, but because of his fragile condition, the vet has advised us to wait several days before giving him additional vaccinations.

This is an extreme case of neglect, one that didn’t happen overnight. The muscles in his hind legs have atrophied due to non-use. It has taken months for him to reach this state.

It is going to be months before Bogart will be healthy enough to be adopted into a loving home.

One of our favorite questions is when folks ask us, “What can I do to help?” Today is your chance to make a difference in the life of this neglected and abused dog. Your support can ensure that Bogart will get a second chance. Right now, today, you have the chance to make a difference in this dog’s life and help Fuzzy Friends do what we do best….. GIVE SECOND CHANCES.

In advance, thank you for being part of this work of love!

We will keep you updated on Bogart’s struggle back to health.
